Common Sense Day – Nov 4

November 4, 2021

November 4th – Common Sense Day, sometimes referred to as Use Your Common Sense Day.

I looked up the definition of Common Sense this morning on Word Hippo and cringed to see:

      Noun
  1. (obsolete) An internal sense, formerly believed to be the sense by which information from the other five senses is understood and interpreted.
  2. Ordinary sensible understanding; one’s basic intelligence which allows for plain understanding and without which good decisions or judgments cannot be made.

“Obsolete”.  Really.
Oh, the definition is obsolete, not common sense.  I think.  It did make me reflect a moment; am I appropriately utilizing my reasoning powers without over-thinking things?

“Stop and think a minute,” my dad would remind me, especially in my younger years.  He was probably hoping my developing common sense would speak up in those moments.  Common sense survives the dichotomy that while valuable it is for some reason frequently under-estimated.

I’m just wondering,
Why does Common Sense Day occur AFTER Election Day?
