New program: “Wordsmith”

April 1, 2021

By Phil Ransom

Let me guess. Your pharmacist doesn’t work for you full time. Am I right? Me either. She’s excellent. I’m not looking for anyone else. How about your mechanic? I could never afford him full-time. Great work, sound advice, and good value make for confident calm when I turn the key.  Whether I’m measuring this drive in minutes or hours, I  know I’m good to go.

We share our favorite experts and specialists with others. Because we’re known clients, when we need their skills we don’t wait long. They work for us a few hours at a time and their quality workmanship results in our peace of mind. It’s worth every penny. How many of these work for you as needed?
• Mechanic
• Physician
• Attorney
• Pharmacist
• Barber/Stylist
• Dentist
• Personal Trainer
• HVAC Specialist
You probably thought of more.

Did writer/ editor come to mind? It should have. Like those above and others you thought of, writers can be expensive.  The quoting process chews through valuable time.

Clarity is vital to your effectiveness at work, with staff, volunteers, policies, instructions; any time readers must understand what you mean the first time.
Clarifying is time-consuming and expensive. Mishaps are worse and cost even more.  Clear communication can avoid all that.
That’s why I’m introducing my new Wordsmith Program,

Def: to apply craftsman-like skills to word use.

[Already know this is what you need?
Note me. ]

I learned years ago that when you search for something online and find nothing, hear {crickets} it can mean one of two things:
This is nothing anyone would buy, that’s why.
Or nobody’s thought of this yet. Don’t sit around!
I’m hoping it’s the second one. It’s time to find out.

From April through December, I’m piloting what I call Wordsmith, a program to help people communicate well in print or online. I like the word because it’s a noun, and it’s a verb. (I know, I know, only a word guy…)  This pilot is limited to 10 solo or small office units and 5 large office or corporate units.

Solo or small office unit:
a lead (owner, executive director, manager),
team members who create or work with content can also be added,
maximum of four in the unit.

Large office unit:
a C-level executive,
their executive or administrative assistant can be added,
maximum of two in the unit.

As a member, you’ll be able to send me anything you need reviewed, tweaked, or edited. I’ll turn it around in a few hours, and you’ll be on your way. There’s no minimum or maximum to what you can send me each month – workflow varies through the year. It sure would be sweet, though, to be able to say to your assistant, “Let’s have Phil wordsmith this,” knowing it’s already paid for.  You’ll have it back and out the door in the time it would have taken to get a quote the way we do things now.

You’ll have options. This is fluid. On three separate documents, you might say:

  •  “Just shoot me a Loom review, I’ll fix whatever” (Loom is perfect for this.. and free to you)
  •  “I just need this checked over – it says what I want it to.”
  •  “Ok… I wrote this in a hurry… it may need some serious wordsmithing.”

Wordsmith is not a slick, automated system or anything.  We’re in quality craftsmanship, made-by-hand, artisan mode.

Because this is a pilot program I’ll check with you periodically to ask your perspective. What’s working well?  What can we enhance? Anything we don’t need? Expect simple, straightforward inquiries. If we need to drill down or explore, we’ll pick up the phone or .  Think Essentialism / Effortless – with a nod to Greg McKeown.

We’ll decide in early December if this is worth continuing. If it is, your 2022 rate will be the same as the pilot rate, even if—  (You know the rest of that sentence!)

Does this sound like something your and your immediate team needs? Send me a note ( )  with Wordsmith Program in the subject line. We’ll schedule ten minutes or so to talk on Zoom about specifics. If everything looks good and there’s room available, you’re in. If not, you and I know we explored it. This could be fun. I look forward to the possibility of helping your communications shine.
